Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems Case Studies

Hybrid power systems combine two or more energy conversion mechanisms, or two or more fuels for the same mechanism, that when integrated, overcome limitations inherent in either.  Hybrid systems provide a high level of energy security and reliability through the integrated mix of complementary generation methods, and often will incorporate a storage system (battery, fuel cell) or fossil-fueled power generation to ensure consistent supply. 

Current commercial, utility-scale hybrid energy systems include geothermal + solar PV, biomass + solar CSP, solar PV + fuel cells, wind + solar PV, biodiesel + wind, gas + solar CSP, and coal + solar CSP.

 

Biomass + Solar CSP

Termosolar Borges Hybrid Power Plant

36 + 22.5 MW  |  Spain

Upon completion in late 2012/ early 2013, the Termosolar Borges Hybrid Power Plant, with 36 MW biomass and 22.5 MW solar CSP power generation, will be the world’s first utility-scale generation plant to combine integrated solar thermal technology with biomass steam turbine generation.

Enel Green Power Stillwater Hybrid Power Plant

33 + 26 MW  |  Nevada, U.S.

Commissioned in 2011 with 33 MW geothermal and 26 MW solar PV power generation, the Enel Green Power Stillwater Hybrid Power Plant is the first hybrid power plant in the world to combine the continuous, reliable base generation of a binary-cycle geothermal power plant with the peak capacity potential of solar PV generation.

Zhangbei National Wind and PV Energy Storage and Transmission Demonstration Project

As of completion in 2011, the Zhangbei National Wind ad PV Energy Storage and Transmission Demonstration Project is the world’s first and, to date, only utility-scale hybrid renewable energy plant to integrate utility-scale wind and solar PV generation with large scale lithium-ion battery energy storage.

Apple Maiden iCloud Data Center

Upon completion in late 2012, the Apple Maiden iCloud Data Center in North Carolina will be the world’s largest non-utility fuel cell installation, the largest SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) installation, and the largest end-user owned onsite solar array in the United States.

Bonaire WEB Biodiesel Wind Power Plant

The Bonaire Island WEB (Water en Energie Bedrijf Bonaire) Biodiesel Wind Power Plant project, with 14 MW biodiesel generation, 11 MW wind generation, and 3 MW battery energy storage, is the world’s largest, stand-alone, fully integrated biodiesel and wind power plant, supplying 100% of the power demand for the island.
